Cycle tour on the Via Verde

Jaén – Alcaudete – Doña Mencía – Puente Genil

On this trip, you will explore the Sierra de Subbética by bike. This hilly natural area lies between Jaén, Córdoba and Granada and is particularly famous for its many olive groves. You cycle 120 km at a relaxed pace on an old railroad line that leads over many viaducts, through pretty villages and past old railroad stations. The route is car-free and there are numerous pubs and restaurants along the way. You will spend the night in good hotels in authentic villages, where you can enjoy Andalusian cuisine on the terrace of the village square in the evening. This trip can be extended and adapted in many ways.

Cycle route:

The cycle route is 120 km long, is hilly, but has no steep sections and is downhill overall. (660 meters uphill, 930 meters downhill). You can find good information on the website www.viasverdes.com.

Tour Cycling in Andalucia:

From day to day:

Day 1: Arrival Málaga – Jaén
You will arrive at Málaga airport. Welcome to Andalusia!
A Tejeda Travel representative will be waiting for you to give you an information pack and discuss the trip with you. He or she will take you to the bus or train that will take you to Jaén in 3 hours. You will spend the night in a comfortable hotel within walking distance of the historic center. You can relax from the journey with a drink and a tapa in one of the city’s cozy squares.

Day 2: Jaén
Free day in Jaén. In the morning, have a look at the lively market. The cathedral is also well worth a visit. There is an interesting museum which includes the remains of Roman baths and, if you wish, you can visit the castle at the top of the hill from where you will have a wonderful view of the city. Rental bikes will be brought to you in the evening or the next morning. During the tour, you are responsible for repairing a tire yourself. If there are any major problems, the bike will be repaired or replaced by the service-oriented rental company.

Day 3: Jaén – Alcaudete
After breakfast you get on your bikes and ride to the starting point of the Via Verde. The tour can begin! You can carry the luggage yourself on the bike or have it transported (at extra cost).
The first stage will take you over 45 km to Alcaudete. Halfway there is an excellent lunch option. In the late afternoon you will arrive at your accommodation located in Alcaudete. In the evening you can explore the village.

Cycling tour in Spain

Day 4: Alcaudete – Doña Mencía
Second stage. This one has a length of about 35 km. Among other things, you will pass by the beautifully situated village of Zuheros. There is a possibility to extend this day by 20 km and visit the village of Baena. There you can visit a working olive mill. You can have lunch, for example, in an old train wagon at the former station of Luque. Overnight stay in a hotel with swimming pool in the lovely village of Doña Mencía.

Day 5: Doña Mencía – Puente Genil
Third stage. About 45 km to go until the final destination. There are again excellent lunch options along the way. Overnight stay in a pleasant hotel on the outskirts of town. The bikes will be picked up in the evening.

Day 6: Puente Genil – departure Málaga
You will board the train (tickets are pre-arranged) and be taken to Málaga. The end of a wonderful journey!

Possible adaptations/extensions
We tailor the trip to your needs and wishes. Possible adaptations would be:
– A night in Málaga at the beginning of the trip (e.g. in case of a late flight).
– Dividing the tour over more or less stages.
– Extra nights at the stages to do excursions from there.
– Visit to Cordoba or Granada.
– Extension at the coast.
